HS Chapter 44: The hopeless sister studies (in the clinic)

“—–I see. It seems Nee-sama at first glance has some problems with sentence problems.”

“Un. Just a bit… No, I think I’m pretty bad at them…”

I took a math quiz designed specifically by Koma. Koma, who graded it, pointed that out to me.

“I’ve been able to solve some simple math problems thanks to the excellent guidance of Koma… But, I’m not really good at sentence problems. I don’t know how to make an equation out of sentences, it’s always confusing to me.”

“The area of making up your own equation from a sentence is easy to get tripped up. What is X and Y, and then from where to where in the sentence should you make the equation? If you can’t identify that, you won’t be able to solve sentence simultaneous equation problems.”

“You’re right… Uuu, it’s so difficult…”

I groan as I stare into the unsolvable sentence problem. The problem that Koma created is,

‘She went to the supermarket and bought a total of 14 pieces of onions for 50 yen each and potatoes for 60 yen each and paid 790 yen. How many onions and potatoes did Nee-sama buy this time?’

That’s written. I can’t do it… I have no idea how to put that into a formula.

“By the way, Nee-sama. Leaving aside the equation itself for now, do you know the answer to the problem itself?”

“Eh? I bought 5 onions and 9 potatoes, right?”

“…. Well done. I knew you could do it, Nee-sama.”

For some reason, I can always figure out the answer to problems like this where I have to find the price or the number of pieces. I understand that, but… I can’t make an equation.

I wonder what’s going on in my goofy brain when I’m trying to solve it…? Why do I know only the answer?

“This is probably the result of Nee-sama’s unconscious training while she is shopping for groceries at the supermarket.”

“Training?”

“Yes. I think Nee-sama usually constructs a formula in her mind while shopping and calculates, ‘How much of this and that will be the price. It’s more profitable this way’. I’m sure that’s why your answers to these questions are so readily available.”

“Ooh, I get it.”

I agree with Koma’s plausible explanation. Is that so? That’s why I can give only the answer… Wow, you’re so amazing, Koma. Perhaps she knows me better than I know myself…?

“Therefore. I’m sure that Nee-sama will soon be able to make equations for sentence problems as well, since you are making equations unconsciously. The rest is just getting used to it by practice…”

“Is that true? I’m not so confident about it…”

“It’s okay, you definitely will be able to do it. There’s a bit of a trick for these—-”

Koma said that and uses her notes to explain to me the points and tips I should keep in mind on how to solve the sentence problems.

She’s an angel… Unlike other subjects, mathematics is easier to understand if you have someone else actually solving it for you.

“—- That’s why. Now, Nee-sama, please try and make an equation of the previous sentence problem like I did now.”
“Un… I understand. Hm, first I find what X and Y are… Then… Just like this?”
“Yup, you did it correctly, Nee-sama ♪ See, you could do it, couldn’t you?”

I’m starting little by little to understand Koma’s detailed guidance. How do I put it… It’s pretty fun solving problems. Studying together with Koma is even more so.

“What’s left is solving problems repeatedly and you’ll be able to solve them immediately! I’ll have you focus on sentence problems today. I’ll pick out some good problems for you to solve after you get some rest.”

“Yes. I got it, Koma-sensei. I’ll take a break the—”

*Knock*, *Knock*, *Knock*.

‘Koma-san, Mako-san. Is it fine for me to enter?’

“”Ah, yes. Please enter.””

Just as I’m about to take a break, there’s a knock at the door of the waiting room where we’re both staying.

“I’ll excuse myself. How are you both doing with your studies?”

The one who entered is Ogawa Sayuri-san who’s a nurse and always stands close to the doctor. Holding a tray with two cups of barley tea, she approached us while smiling.

“Thank you, Sayuri-san. I’m making amazing progress.”

“Thank you for all you do for us, Sayuri-sama. Thank you so much for letting us use your clinic. It saved us both.”

“I’m happy to hear that. Ah, if it’s okay with you two, I brought barley tea.”

Sayuri-san says that and hands me and Koma a cup of chilled barley tea.

“Oh my, nice timing, Sayuri-san! I was just getting thirsty, thank you!”

“Thank you for the barley tea, Sayuri-sama. I was just thinking about taking a break.”
“Ara… I should’ve brought some snacks along with the tea, then. I’ll bring something sweet later, so please wait for me.”

Not only are we able to use the waiting room in the clinic as a place to study, but we are also receiving even services like this… I’m so grateful and sorry for all the help they’ve given us.

… That’s right. Koma and I are currently studying for the exams in the waiting room of Dr. Chiyuri’s clinic. You’re probably wondering how the hell something this crazy happened? It all started yesterday when the doctor suggested it to us——

◇ ◇ ◇

‘I’m pretty sure you can’t study at home and at the library… Then, you both said you were looking for a place where you could study in some privacy, right? So, Mako-chan and Koma-chan. As an apology for calling you before the big exam, today and tomorrow— How about studying in the (my)clinic?’

“”…Yes?””

Just as we were about to go home to study after the Koma’s exam was successfully completed. Dr. Chiyuri made such an outlandish suggestion to Koma and me while we were leaving.

Study in the clinic…? When I first heard the suggestion, I thought it was just a usual joke by the doctor, but I was wrong… The doctor was serious.

“Well, to put it more accurately, how about studying in the waiting room in the clinic? It’s pretty quiet there and you can study in peace.”
“”Ha, hmm…””

“You can stay overnight here so you can study until late without worrying about the train. Unlike the library, nobody here will get mad at you if you teach each other how to study out loud, and Sayuri-chan— Ah, about nurse-chan. Sayuri-chan or I will check on the two of you from time to time, and I think it will help you both to focus on your studies. So, how about it?”

Me and Koma couldn’t help but look at each other at the doctor’s invitation. How about it? She asked us…

“Thank you, but… It’s true that we were looking for a place where we could focus on study, and we really appreciated the suggestion.”

“… To begin with, Nee-sama and I are not prepared to stay overnight, sensei.”

“But, you’ve brought your study materials with you, am I wrong? You told me you came here directly from school. That’s all you need. I’m always ready for you two to sleep over anytime, so you don’t have to worry about anything, Mako-chan and Koma-chan♪ Not only do we have a room for the two of you to stay in, but we also have toothbrushes, towels, pajamas and bras that are the perfect height and size for both of you.”

… I’m very interested as to why the doctor knows my and Koma’s three sizes and in addition is already prepared for our overnight stay… I’ll refrain from tsukkoming her. It feels like I’ll poke a hornet’s nest.

In the meantime, I called Aunty and asked her for her judgement on whether we should stay here or leave as soon as possible, but,

“—-Fumufumu, I got it…. Isn’t it really perfect?”

“It’s fine!?”

“Yeah. Isn’t it a good place to study? I trust that doctor in taking care of you two. Well, I just worry you’ll interfere with her work. And be careful not to be rude to her.”

—Is what Aunty said and immediately approved it. I had thought she’d definitely forbid it.

“But… I still think we should go home. I feel bad for the doctor, and I… I have to make dinner for Aunty…”

“The doctor suggested it, right? Then there’s no need to be shy about it. And don’t worry about my dinner. I’m okay as long as there’s alcohol.”

“U, un. When you say it like that… Hm, alcohol? … Ey, Aunty? I thought you agreed with me on an alcohol rest day for tod—”

“See ya, Mako! Give my respects to the doctor!”
“Oi, you! Aunty!? Hello? Hello!?”

… Meiko Aunty. She is taking advantage of our sleepover to drink behind my back even though it’s an alcohol rest day….

When I return home I’ll have to make sure whether the alcohol has decreased.

“Miyano-san also gave you her OK sign, correct? Then, it’s okay. Hmm?”

“No, but… I think that studying in the clinic would disturb the doctor, nurse, and of course the other patients…”

“We will, won’t we? Nee-sama is correct, no matter how you see it, it’s a lack of common sense to study here…”

“Don’t mind it. Because there are no more people with appointments today, and office hours are over in an hour. Also, tomorrow is doctor’s no-consultation day so you can rest at ease and use the whole day. You won’t hinder me at all, and more importantly, I’m the one in charge here, so I have no problem with it. Hey, Sayuri-chan also thinks that, right?”

“That’s right. Koma-san and Onee-san. Feel free to use it, as long as you two are okay with it.”

“See? Sayuri-chan also endorses it. Do stay overnight!”

And with the nurses on her side, the doctor attacked aggressively. I thought it would still be a nuisance, so I refrained for a while along with Koma…

 ◇ ◇ ◇

“In the end, we gave into Dr. Chiyuri’s suggestion.”

“That’s correct…”

The doctor persuaded us splendidly to study in the waiting room of the clinic, as you can see.

I never would’ve thought I’d be studying for my final exams in a clinic… It’s really too precious of an experience…

“… Ehm. Mako-san, Koma-san. As I thought, having you two stay overnight here and study was an inconvenience for you two…?”

Me and Koma mutter something with a wry smile and Sayuri-san looks at us anxiously.

“Ah, no, no, it’s not an inconvenience. As I said earlier, I’m making a lot of progress in my studies, so I’m grateful and not annoyed. You’ve been very helpful, Sayuri-san. Right, Koma?”

“It’s as Nee-sama says. Instead, we’re very happy to be treated so well by Sayuri-sama… And also, by the doctor.”

Yesterday, we rented the waiting room to study after office hours until the sun went down, and after the sun went down, we had dinner and a bath at Dr. Chiyuri and Sayuri’s house on the second floor of their clinic, which is built as a house with a clinic.

Of course, after that, we were allowed to use the waiting room again and studied until about 10:00 p.m. When we got sleepy, we went to bed in the room that was prepared for me and Koma. (TN: Tf, survival prep Dr. Chiyuri!?)

Today is Sunday and I’m continuing my studies in the waiting room. In addition, I’ll get a delicious breakfast and drinks and desserts in between breaks. I don’t know how to thank Dr. Chiyuri and Sayuri-san for receiving this treatment.

“I’m happy then… Honestly speaking, the doctor invited you half overbearingly… I was anxious that it might inconvenience you. I’m very happy to hear you say that.”

Sayuri-san looks relieved from her heart. She’s really nice… She doesn’t have to worry about that.

We’re the ones who have a lot to be thankful and sorry for.

“And then… I’m sorry, but let me apologize. Mako-san, Koma-san.”

“Huh…? Apologize?”

“Etto… Sayuri-sama? Why are you apologizing?”

We tilt our heads at the same time, as we had no idea why Sayuri-san is apologizing to us. Is there something to apologize to us…?

“I’m sorry. Whenever the two of you come to this clinic, Chiyuri-sensei plays with you, doesn’t she? Of course, last month and the ones before that… Yesterday too, she was touching Koma-san’s body and teasing her…”

“”Ah…””

Sayuri-san’s words made me remember yesterday’s incident… Aah, un. The doctor tickled me, played with me, and did a lot of other things to me. I make a bitter face instinctively.

Koma who’s sitting next to me seems to make the same face as she remembers something.

“She didn’t do it with ill will or malice. She’s originally mischievous by nature and then… The doctor has always loved the two of you… not just as her patient or family member of the patient but as her own daughters. So she tends to be a bit extreme in the treatment of you two.”

As her daughters…? Certainly the doctor has been taking care of Koma and me for the past six years, so it’s no wonder we’re like daughters to her. Actually, I’m flattered to know that the doctor looks at us like that.

“I do think that sometimes she goes a bit too far with teasing you. But… She’s definitely a nice person. That’s why, I’d be glad if you don’t hate her. She’ll be scolded by me later…”

“I see. I like the doctor. I understand that the doctor is a brilliant and responsible adult! Isn’t that right, Koma?”
“Eh…? Yeah… She’s been caring for me… And I owe the most to her… So, I don’t really hate the doctor either…”

“Thank you very much!”

When Koma and I replied back, Sayuri-san smiled so happily like a flower blooming. As expected of someone who’s been close to Dr. Chiyuri for so long. When she praises and follows up the doctor she’s as happy as praising herself, she’s the epitome of an assistant.

“…Ah. By the way, I heard from Koma yesterday that Sayuri-san and Chiyuri-sensei have been together for over 10 years?”

“Ah, yes. That’s true.”

Maybe it’s because Koma has a lot of opportunities to be alone with Sayuri-san in the examination room, that it seems like she’s been talking to her a lot so far… As a nurse and a family member of a patient, I rarely had the chance to talk with Sayuri-san in such a detailed manner.

It’s just break time now, so it’s a good opportunity to talk to Sayuri-san.

“You’ve known each other for a long time. Sayuri-san and the doctor went to elementary, junior high, high school, and even college together… In addition to working together, you are now sharing a room in a house on the second floor of this clinic.”
“…(*Mumble*) Wrong. It’s not sharing a room but living together…. Even though it looks like this I’m… her… girlfriend…”

“? Hm, did you say something?”

“No, I said nothing.”

….? Sayuri-san muttered something? Did I imagine it?

“*Cough*… So, Mako-san? What about it?”

“Ah, nothing. I was just wondering if you’ve had it difficult. Sayuri-san said so herself earlier, right? Dr. Chiyuri is a mischievous person. If you’ve been together for that long, I’m sure the doctor has had a lot of fun with Sayuri-san.”

“Ah, I’m curious about that too. I can’t believe you’re going out with that doctor… I wonder if she’s not too difficult for you?”

Koma goes along with my question and asks Sayuri-san too. In response to our question, Sayuri-san puts her hand to her lips and appears to think for a while, before slowly answering us.

“…. Let me see. She wasn’t difficult… I’d be lying if I said that. Just staying next to her itself… It was very difficult.”

“Being next to her… Was difficult?”

“Yes. She’s a brilliant doctor, so it was very hard for me to study hard enough to go to middle school and college together with her. Of course, I had to study even harder to get the job to work with her. Unlike the doctor, I was not a good student, so I had to study really hard and desperately… It’s the same now, too.”

“Ah…”

Sayuri-san’s words somehow appear familiar. I can’t help but glance at Koma sitting next to me when she said that… I think that I understand her feelings a little about being around an excellent person.

“Then there are other things that are difficult other than just being close to the doctor.”

“Eh? Other things? What are those…?”

“….. As Mako-san experienced, she loves to play with people she likes, so it’s really, really hard for me to go out with her…. She sexually harasses me whenever she can, and teases me of my embarrassing past, which is an everyday occurrence. And then… And then… (*Grumble*, *Grumble*).. She’s an eccentric person who can’t resist a pretty girl, and even when I’m around her, she’s caressing another girl right in front of me. Even if it’s a junior high school student like Mako-san, she doesn’t hesitate to touch Mako-san, and no matter how many times I warn her about it, her bad habit still hasn’t gone away… And yet, she’s my selfish queen who restricts me this way or that…”

“Sa… Sayuri-san? I feel like you’re diverting off…? Are you okay, Sayuri-san!?”

“Sayuri-sama, they’re coming out… Along with your true feelings and complaints, something black is coming out too…”

Whoaa? She’s strange. I don’t know well what she started talking about midway… But, I feel like I see a dark aura oozing from Sayuri-san?

What’s wrong? I wonder if it’s time to put a stop to Sayuri-san’s continued mumbling of curse words…

“… But. I never thought that it was harsh.”

“”Eh?””

As I am thinking about this with Koma, Sayuri smiled the kind smile she had shown earlier and said.

“It was difficult… Staying next to her. I wanted to be next to her forever. As long as I had that desire, there was nothing I couldn’t do. After all, it’s a given? Not just now… The effort I spent to be with her for 10, 20, or even more years together wasn’t harsh at all. I was able to get through my studies because I had her who watched me all the time, and then teased and improperly carrassed… I think that her occasional caress is an expression of her love.”

“”…………””

When she finishes talking, Sayuri-san puts the cups we had finished drinking from on the tray and stands up.

“I’m sorry that the conversation took a strange turn. I think it’ll be difficult for Mako-san as well, but do your best at studying. I’m sure that Mako-san will do great… Just like I had the doctor next to me… Mako-san has her excellent sister Koma-san as tutor. With this, I’ll be taking my leave.”

After saying that, Sayuri-san bows her head to us and leaves the room.

Hmmm? I didn’t really understand half of her story… Anyway, If I want to stay with Koma, I’ll have to study hard… is it?

“…. (*Mumble*) Wanting to be with her, and staying with her forever… The effort spent to be together is not harsh… I too… I want to be with Nee-sama forever…”

“Hm? Did you say something, Koma?”
“No, nothing at all, Nee-sama. Just… I thought that I should work hard like Sayuri-sama… In a lot of ways.”

Something about Sayuri-san’s story inspired Koma, too, and she seems to be getting fired up.

“That’s right, we have to study hard… Let’s do our best together and immediately study hard. Koma, I’m sorry but would you teach me again?”

“Yes! Leave it to me!… Now, as I declared earlier, you are going to solve sentence problems of simultaneous equations. Don’t hesitate to tell me what you don’t understand, Nee-sama!”

“Yeah. Well, good to have you, Koma-sensei.”

We finish our break and resume studying.

Now, to avoid red marks… And then also not to mention Sayuri-san’s story… I have to study hard to become a great sister who can stand next to Koma, who is a talented and hardworking person.

I think Sayuri’s explanation tells us why she’d go to such lengths. I feel that if it was possible, the doctor would definitely adopt Koma and Mako.
